Fortified Verona

Military Strategy

Roman, barbarian, municipal, Scaliger, Venetian and Austrian townwalls develope essentially on 3 lines. The city's history is written in its townwalls. Read the story of Verona starting from building materials is fascinating. Marble, porphyry, sandstone, bricks, stones tell of historical and geological eras, cataclysms, events and fashions.

Verona was praised by soldiers and merchants of all ages as a stronghold. For the 10 km long townwall and the harmonious development of architecture inside it, Verona is UNESCO heritage listed. Fortifications of all periods and types make Verona unique in the world. Fortresses, ramparts, barracks and a military hospital, walls, fortified gates, towers, castle and arsenal, we have a very rich and well documented military architecture: from the 1st century B.C.  until the 19th A.D.  In the era of the Risorgimento the defense system consisted of three front lines.

Note: I advise you to visit the gate Porta Palio and the bastion Maddalene at Porta Vescovo.
