About food and wine

Wine

Don't drink wine, taste it! Hundreds of wineries are scattered on the hills of Verona.

Each of them is a world, worth to be discovered. Surrounded by vineyards, wineries often boast a rich history.

You will have the opportunity to taste different white, red and rose wines, or a single wine, but different years of harvest. For vertical tasting, especially suitable is the rich red wine Amarone, very appreciated by Amateurs and professionals.

As a sommelier, I can assure you that you can understand what kind of wine you are looking at without sipping it. Color and aroma, intensity and duration will tell you about it.

Wine is culture, it's the result of hard work and passion. Wine is akin to poetry.

Cheese

In Italy, cheese is a national passion. There are no limits to perfection. Italians are great masters and inventors even in this field.

Combining cow's, sheep's and goat's milk with herbs, flowers and other sometimes unexpected things, they create real masterpieces for gourmets. You will get an unforgettable experience by visiting our cellars, where cheese ages wrapped in straw and dregs of pressed grapes.

Olive oil

Today it is only used with food, but before it was used as source of light, as a Church-sanctified  medical and sacred ointment.

For thousands of years, the ritual of collecting and pressing olives remained unchanged. If you visit an oil-mill, you can see this ceremony and try real olive oil and other products prepared with it.

The ideal time for this tour is from October to December. Rotating old millstones and the juicy aroma of fresh squeezed olives will not leave you indifferent.

These oil-mills are open to tourists:

  • CA' Rainene Olive Farm
  • Bonamini
  • Cisano oil-mill - Museum
  • Salvagno

Rice

In August, golden rice decorates our fertile plain in the South of Verona. Local farmers, thanks to the availability of water sources and irrigation channels, have been growing rice since the middle Ages. And in parallel, they developed fishing.

On a rice fields tour, accompanied by croaking frogs and singing cicadas, we will visit ancient mills and see how they process grains using wooden hydraulic mechanisms.

Vialone Nano Veronese is one of the best Italian rice varieties and deserves being called "the treasure of our swamps".
